Dr. Ekta sits down again with Master Perfumer Veronique Gabai for our weekly Fragrance Friday series. Veronique takes a deep dive into the process of testing a scent and the mindset of a true perfumer.

“As you learn the craft and you and you start in that world of fragrance, you always have the image of the perfumer, smelling those little pieces of paper, that we call blotters. And blotters allow you to smell a multitude of things, and so it allows you to work and fine tune your products.” (Gabai).

Veronique understands that the smell of a product on its own is essential to consumer appeal but combining a scent with our skin is even more crucial to how it makes us feel.

“You need to smell on skin because skin will have chemistry with the scent that you’re working on and it is important that you finalize the product you’re working on by smelling on skin, as it is important for people to try on skin after they created a few fragrances they are interested in because at the end it is skin that matters!” (Gabai).

She even goes further into how the consumer should identify their compatibility with a scent and the several factors that can cause a smell to pull us in or draw us back, which goes far beyond the elements of the perfume alone!

“There is the nature of your skin, level of moisturization of your skin, there is the Ph of your skin, there’s also what you’ve eaten before, what is your food regimen, that is what will influence the way a fragrance smells on you, so there’s a lot of different factors.” (Gabai).
